ChildLife Essentials Liquid Iron is a liquid iron supplement for children that delivers 10 mg of iron bisglycinate per 5 ml teaspoon. Iron is required for healthy red blood cell formation and for the transport of oxygen around the body by haemoglobin. Young children and teenagers are among the populations at risk of inadequate iron intake.

The iron here is supplied as ferrous bisglycinate chelate. In a chelated form the mineral is bound to an amino acid, which is what makes it well absorbed and one of the better tolerated forms of supplemental iron. The whole bottle holds 118 ml (4 fl oz).

This product is suitable from 6 months. The manufacturer sets three age bands: infants 6 to 12 months, children 1 to 3 years, and children 4 years and over. There is no separate teenage band, the 4+ instruction covers older children and teenagers.

The formula has six ingredients: iron (as ferrous bisglycinate chelate), vegetable glycerin, deionised water, natural berry flavour, citric acid and xanthan gum. That's the complete list.

How to use

Shake the bottle well before each use.
Measure the dose for your child's age, half a teaspoon for infants 6 to 12 months, one teaspoon for children 1 to 3 years, one teaspoon for children 4 years and over.
Give the dose directly, or mix it into a drink or food.
Give once daily. Do not exceed the stated dose.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and replace the cap after use.
