Understanding Influenza: Causes, Symptoms & Prevention
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that affect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can range from mild to severe and, in some cases, lead to complications—especially among young children, older adults, and people with weakened immunity.
What Causes Influenza
The flu is caused by influenza viruses, mainly Type A and Type B, which are responsible for most seasonal outbreaks.
-
Type A viruses often trigger large epidemics.
-
Type B viruses cause smaller, but still serious, seasonal outbreaks.
-
Type C viruses are milder and less common.
Influenza spreads easily through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. You can also catch it by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms typically appear 1–4 days after exposure and can include:
-
Fever or chills
-
Sore throat and cough
-
Runny or stuffy nose
-
Headache
-
Muscle aches and fatigue
-
Occasionally vomiting or diarrhea (especially in children)
Prevention Tips
-
Get the flu vaccine every year — it’s the best protection.
-
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
-
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
-
Avoid close contact with anyone showing flu symptoms.
-
Stay home and rest if you’re unwell.
Treatment and Recovery
Most people recover from influenza within a week with rest, hydration, and fever-reducing medication. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe antiviral medication to shorten the duration of symptoms.
